A Top company - serving Annapolis, MD

HeatShield Fireplace Services Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

How HeatShield Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

HeatShield makes solid products, but every system has its weak spots. Here’s what we find most often in Annapolis homes:

  • Cease Fire mortar flaking at the firebox seams. The older Cease Fire line used a mortar compound that breaks down after years of thermal cycling. You’ll see hairline cracks along the back wall of the firebox, right where it meets the floor. We vacuum out the loose material, re-point the joints with refractory mortar rated for direct flame contact, and the firebox is sound again.
  • HeatShield Cerfractory panel drift on the side walls. On the Eco-Smart series, the side panels can shift slightly as the metal firebox expands and contracts. This is a slow process. If the gap stays under a quarter inch, we can usually reseat the panel and re-anchor it. Bigger gaps mean replacement, and we’ll show you the camera footage before we recommend that.
  • Smoke rollout caused by a damper that’s not matched to the flue. A surprising number of Annapolis HeatShield installs were done with an aftermarket damper that’s smaller than the flue opening. The fire drafts fine visually, but smoke seeps into the room on windy days. We measure the throat, swap in the right-sized damper, and the problem goes away.
  • Condensation staining above the lintel on gas conversions. When a HeatShield wood unit gets converted to gas by someone who didn’t account for moisture, the cooler exhaust condenses inside the upper firebox. You’ll see rust-colored drips. The fix is usually a flue liner adjustment and a smaller burner, not a new fireplace. We tell you that because it’s true.
  • Pilot assembly failures on the HeatShield vent-free gas logs. The thermocouple has a limited lifespan, and we replace them regularly in Annapolis. It’s a one-visit fix, less than an hour, and you’ll find the part on the shelf at most supply houses. No reason to call the manufacturer and wait two weeks.

Our HeatShield Fireplace Services Process

  1. 1
You call, we listen. A live person answers. You describe what’s happening. We ask a few questions, then give you an honest idea of what we’re probably walking into.
  2. 2
The sweep arrives in a window you agreed to. Uniformed, background-checked, and the same person the whole way through the job.
  3. 3
We inspect with a camera before anything else. HeatShield fireboxes hide problems well. We run a camera through the flue and across the firebox floor. You watch the screen with us.
  4. 4
We lay out the options and the price. OEM HeatShield parts when the warranty or the system calls for it. Quality aftermarket when it makes no difference and saves you money. You decide, we don’t push.
  5. 5
The work gets done, tested, and cleaned up. We run a smoke test or light the system depending on the fuel. The work area is clean when we leave.
  6. 6
You get the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the repair isn’t right, one call brings us back at no charge.

If it doesn’t need doing, we’ll tell you that too, Wendell’s rule, not a company line.

What HeatShield Fireplace Services Cost in Annapolis

Here’s what we charge for common HeatShield work. These are honest ranges, based on what we’ve billed over years in Annapolis:

  • Gas fireplace service and cleaning: $125-$185
  • Wood fireplace sweep and inspection: $165-$225
  • Firebox mortar re-pointing: $200-$475 depending on how much surface area is involved
  • Damper replacement or adjustment: $180-$350
  • Thermocouple or pilot assembly replacement: $140-$240
  • Firebox panel replacement (per panel): $275-$450 installed

What moves the price: access, the age of the system, and whether we need OEM HeatShield parts. We’re not the cheapest shop in Annapolis, and we don’t try to be. We’re the one that answers the phone afterward. Call (240) 851-3653 for a free estimate before burning season fills our calendar.

Why Annapolis Homeowners Call Top Hat Chimney for HeatShield Work

Wendell Pike started Top Hat Chimney in 1999, and he’s spent a good chunk of the years since working in Annapolis, including the Historic District where the chimneys have seen more winters than most of the people living under them. He learned the trade after completing the vocational program at Southwestern College, then put in years of real work before he stopped counting flues. When we show up at your door, it’s a name you can verify and a face you’ll run into again at the hardware store.

What that means for your HeatShield job: we pick the right fix, not the convenient one. If your system only needs service, that’s what we tell you. If it needs a part, we’ll tell you whether OEM matters or whether a DuraFlex or Gelco option will do the same job for less. Every job has our phone number, our address, and a guarantee stamped on it.
