HeatShield Chimney Cleaning & Sweep Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Cleaning & Sweep in Annapolis: What to Know First

HeatShield chimney cleaning and sweep in Annapolis runs $189 to $329 for a standard job, depending on creosote buildup and flue condition, and we’re usually on the roof within five business days, faster if you’ve got an active firebox and a cold front moving in. That’s the honest range, and the number we quote on the phone is the number on the invoice. This page is for Annapolis homeowners who own a HeatShield liner or coating and want a sweep who knows the product well enough to clean it without damaging it. If that’s you, call (240) 851-3653 and a live person answers. It might be me, Wendell Pike, owner of Top Hat Chimney, and if it’s not, someone who works for me and knows HeatShield will get you squared away.

How HeatShield Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

HeatShield makes good product, but nothing lasts forever in a chimney. Here’s what we actually see in Annapolis flues, and what we do when we find it:

  • Cerfractory flue sealant delamination on original HeatShield applications. The older HeatShield Cerfractory system was a poured-in-place sealant. In clay tile flues around the Historic District, where the tile joints have shifted over decades, we see the sealant pull away from the tile face in sheets. It looks fine from the top, but the camera shows gaps. We document it, scope it, and give you a straight verdict on whether a recoat is needed or whether it can wait a year.
  • Gap closure between tile joints on HeatShield resurfaced flues. The HeatShield joint repair system fills eroded mortar joints between tiles. In Annapolis, the freeze-thaw cycles push moisture through the brick, and that moisture works its way behind the joint compound. We’ll sweep the flue carefully, run the camera, and if we see cracking at the tile seams, that’s a repoint of the HeatShield, not a full liner replacement. Big difference in cost.
  • Creosote bonding to the HeatShield surface texture. HeatShield’s coating has a slightly textured finish after application. First-degree creosote brushes off it fine. Second-degree glazing, the tar-like stuff, bonds harder to that texture than to smooth stainless steel. That means a standard sweep sometimes isn’t enough on a HeatShield flue. We may need a rotary head or a chemical treatment first. We’ll tell you before we start.
  • Stainless connector pipe leaks at the HeatShield transition. When a homeowner pairs HeatShield with a wood stove, the transition from the stove’s connector pipe to the coated flue is the weak point. We see smoke staining around the thimble and creosote dripping back down from that joint. It’s not the HeatShield failing. It’s the transition. We clean it, inspect the connection, and tell you if the stove pipe needs reseating.
  • Improper prior cleaning with wire brushes on early HeatShield applications. Some HeatShield coatings, especially the early Cerfractory from the late 1990s and early 2000s, don’t hold up well to aggressive wire brushing. We’ve seen flues where another company went at it hard and left score marks in the coating. Once you score it, moisture gets in, and Annapolis humidity does the rest. We use the right brush for the surface, every time. Camera inspection before and after, no exceptions.

Our HeatShield Chimney Cleaning & Sweep Process

  1. 1
You call (240) 851-3653. A live person answers. We ask what you’re burning, how often, and what kind of HeatShield work was done before. We give you a flat price before we hang up.
  2. 2
We arrive on time. You get a real window, and if something slips, we call. Shoes covers inside, drop cloths around the hearth.
  3. 3
We inspect first. Camera in the flue, top to bottom. You see the footage. If your HeatShield coating looks solid and the creosote is light, we tell you. If it’s bad, you’ll see it.
  4. 4
We clean to the condition. Standard brush for routine soot. Rotary head for glazed creosote on textured HeatShield surfaces. We never use a wire brush on a Cerfractory coating unless it’s already compromised and we’ve talked to you about it.
  5. 5
We walk you through the photos. After the sweep, we run the camera again. You get a plain-English verdict on the HeatShield condition: clean and sound, warrants watching, or needs work.
  6. 6
You get the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something’s not right, one call and we’re back. No arguing.

What HeatShield Chimney Cleaning & Sweep Costs in Annapolis

Here’s the straight pricing for the jobs we do most in Annapolis:

  • Standard sweep and level 1 inspection: $189 to $249. Most HeatShield flues fit here.
  • Sweep with second-degree creosote removal: $249 to $329. When we need the rotary head and more time.
  • Level 2 camera inspection (buying a home, after a chimney fire, or before a liner decision): $149 to $199. We include the camera footage as part of your sweep at no extra charge.
  • HeatShield joint repair or recoating: $40 off any repair over $200 to start, but we give you an exact quote after the camera shows what’s actually happening. Nothing is guessed at.

What moves the price: glazed creosote, flue height on three-story Annapolis homes, and accessibility on steep Colonial roofs. What doesn’t move it: anything we didn’t tell you about before we started. Call (240) 851-3653 for a free estimate. We’ll put it in writing.

Why Annapolis Homeowners Call Top Hat Chimney for HeatShield Work

We’ve been sweeping chimneys in and around Annapolis since 1999, and the Historic District fireplaces we’ve worked on are old enough to have opinions. I personally answer the phone more often than not, and if I don’t, the person who does is someone I’d vouch for. We know HeatShield, but we also install and service DuraFlex and Gelco, so when you need an honest comparison between coating and stainless liner, you get one, not whatever the brand rep told us to push. Every job comes with the 90-Day Done Right Promise, and every price is given upfront, before a single tool comes off the truck. No trip charge inside our service county. Ten percent off always for seniors and veterans. Ask anyone on your street.
