HeatShield is a system, not a cap brand, which means the cap on a HeatShield-treated chimney is usually whatever the original installer chose. That’s where owners get stuck. You might have a Gelco, Olympia, or Famco cap sitting on top of a HeatShield-lined flue, or you might have a HeatShield-branded cap the installing company paired with the resurfacing work. We install and service both, alongside caps and parts from DuraFlex and Copperfield. The compatibility issue is rarely the cap brand; it’s the flue dimensions the cap has to seal against.
We identify the right replacement by taking two measurements: the inside diameter of the clay tile or the HeatShield-treated flue opening, and the outside dimensions of the crown area the cap bolts or clamps to. Flue openings in old Annapolis homes, especially in the Historic District, are not uniform. A flue we measure as 8-1/2 by 13 inches will not take an 8 by 13 cap without gaps, and gaps mean water entry. The other compatibility gotcha: if your HeatShield job included a cap with a custom base plate to accommodate an odd-sized crown, a stock replacement cap may not sit flush. In those cases we cut and fit a base plate on site rather than selling you a cap that rocks and leaks.
Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks or orange staining down the chimney chase or crown. Galvanized and even some stainless caps eventually surrender to Annapolis salt air. Once the welds start rusting, the cap is on its way out, and the stain is your first visual warning. It usually means water is pooling around the base where the cap meets the crown.
- A cap that’s visibly cocked, loose, or missing a section after a storm. The brackets that secure the cap to the crown corrode faster than the cap body. When a nor’easter blows through, a cap held on by one good bracket and two rusted stubs will twist or lift. Sometimes the whole assembly ends up in the yard.
- Rain water or dampness inside the firebox after a heavy storm. A cap that no longer seals lets water run straight down the flue. You’ll notice a musty smell in the off-season, damp ashes, or water staining on the firebox floor. That water is also slowly eroding the HeatShield surface you already paid to have renewed.
- A draft smell or smoky back-puffing that wasn’t there before. When a cap’s mesh screen clogs with creosote, leaves, or the same salt-crud that builds on Bay-facing windows, the flue can’t breathe, and smoke pushes back into the room. If you’ve cleaned the cap screen twice in one season, the screen may be degraded and letting in debris.
- Animal noise, nesting material, or daylight visible from below. Squirrels and starlings can turn a small gap into a full den by the time you notice. Once the cap’s mesh is torn or the base plate has warped, animals get in, and nothing good follows them.

DIY or Call Us?
Replacing a chimney cap means working at height on a sloped or flat roof, often with loose mortar underfoot, and carrying hardware up a ladder that may be older than you are. It depends on where it failed. Bent or rusted brackets can often be replaced, warped mesh screens can sometimes be re-screened, and a loose cap can be reseated.
