No, not directly. A cap keeps out rain, birds, squirrels, and debris, but it will not stop creosote from forming inside the flue. Creosote comes from burning wood, especially wood that is not fully seasoned. If you heat with wood here, burn dry hardwood, keep the stove hot enough for a clean burn, and sweep yearly no matter what. The cap is still essential, but it is not a substitute for a sweep.
Because the flue layout on a lot of Lake Shore split-levels is not standard. Many have a wood stove flue next to a furnace flue, or an offset flue tile that a stock cap cannot seal properly.
